Frequently asked questions
What image should I use to create a normal map?
Use a sharp, front-facing albedo, diffuse texture, or surface photo. Soft lighting and gentle shadows can help the model understand the shape of the surface. Avoid hard cast shadows, clipped highlights, and strong directional lighting. A fully delighted image is not always the best input for normal-map prediction.
Should I choose OpenGL or DirectX?
Use the format expected by your renderer. Blender and many OpenGL workflows use OpenGL normals; Unreal Engine commonly uses DirectX. The difference is the green-channel orientation.
Can the result tile seamlessly?
Yes. Enable seamless processing for repeating materials, then inspect the result in your target renderer because strongly directional source lighting can still reveal seams.
